COMMUNITY: NEIGHBORHOOD MODELS
First graders have been busily constructing small-scale models of neighborhoods in a city. Girls started with thinking and writing about why people would choose to live in a city or suburb. They made connections to living in or nearby San Francisco. Girls brainstormed ideas related to people living in neighborhoods found in a city setting: What are they doing? Where are they going? Why would they choose to live in a city?

LINA del ROBLE, Lower Form Spanish and French SHB/CES Teacher
Many wonderful things are in store for 1st grade girls in Spanish for 2020! They will begin to identify, say, read, and write very simple Spanish words that are part of the games, songs, stories, and activities planned for the fall and winter months. The girls will continue to build their comprehension and pronunciation of Spanish through TPR (Total Physical Response - a kind of body sign language methodology), interactive listening and participation, art, dance, singing, and make believe. We will explore greetings, numbers, nature, animals, feelings, foods, home and school life and multicultural traditions in the Spanish speaking world.

Welcome!

MATH

Girls have been introduced to place value charts, using  Base-10 blocks: ones and tens to build two-digit numbersWhen a player has 10 ones or more, the 10 ones may be traded for a "ten". Girls are using the counting on strategy each time they spin and add the new number of ones on the place value chart.
