LANGUAGE ARTS
In language arts, the girls are busily learning word studywriting, and comprehension skills.
• We are reviewing blends at the beginning and end of words (CCVCC) and introducing blends with a digraph. Girls will be learning to use  the suffix: _ed
• Our main reading selection, Needs Past and Present, reinforces comprehension strategies:
- Summarize
- Fix-it Up monitoring
- Compare and contrast nonfiction text
• Our current unit closes with a fun Reader's Theatre, Humpty Dumpty's Fall.

WRITING
For our next Writing Workshop unit, we will focus on writing opinions and reviews. Girls  are starting with writing opinions about the  collections they brought in from home.
Mrs. Whatmore's 5th grade English class is partnering with first graders to complete planning sheets for writing upcoming reviews of favorite restaurants and books.

SCIENCE
Our next unit of study introduces the phenomenon of light. The girls will observe shadows created by natural and artificial light, and investigate reflections and how light behaves with opaque, translucent, and transparent objects.
Crosscutting concepts include:
• Patterns: observe similarities or differences about how eye positions in animals help them survive
• Cause and Effect: a mirror or flashlight causes the path of light to be redirected, reflected, etc.
• Systems and System Models: follow the path of a light beam using a flashlight and mirror

SEL
Social Emotional Learning activities and discussions teach our students how to express, understand, and connect with self and others. This month's focus introduces THINK and Boundary Bubble lessons.
Girls will be bringing home a THINK card to keep at home. In class, we are giving THINK shout-outs for how classmates are "showing an act of kindness or action" to each other.

MATH
Our math study continues with Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20. Girls will be learning doubles facts (from 1-10), doubles plus 1 using connecting cubes, and playing  doubles games, including: Doubles Concentration, Doubles Cover Up, and Doubles Bump! Math games continue to reinforce the concepts of place value and addition

Work with a Partner:
•Turn over a number card
•Double the number: say Double _is_.
Cover the number on your side

Please continue to play math games at home to practice fact fluency: Partners to 10 and Two Card Draw!.

WOODSHOP: Geoff DeSantis and Danny Seibert
First graders will begin an eight-session of lessons with Geoff DeSantis and Danny Seibert using the  woodshop at the Herbst House. Girls will be introduced to the space, learn  safety rules, and be supervised with using hand tools. Woodworking classes skills will include:
• Using the miter box to cut wood
• Sanding wood with sandpaper
• Assembling wood using straps and glue
• Fixing mistakes with wood filler and sanding, as needed
