Math By the Numbers
First graders are beginning to practice math addition facts to 10. In class, lessons are focusing on the strategy of "count on" to add two numbers. Girls are looking for the larger number to count on from. For example, to solve 2+5, start from 5 and then count on the next two numbers, ...6, 7. The answer is 7. Girls practiced addition to "Make 10 on the Ten Frame" with two-colored counters.

Plants & Animals
First graders have started an investigation about what plants and animals need to thrive in a terrarium habitat. Girls worked collaboratively to build a model (terrarium) to investigate:
• What do plants need to live and grow in a terrarium?
• What do animals need to live and grow in a terrarium?
• What structures or behaviors do plants and animals have that help them live in their habitat?
Throughout the investigation first graders are working in their Science Notebooks: making scientific drawings, writing observations, analyzing findings, and constructing explanations about the needs of plants and animals.
